Do I need a visa to visit India?
Yes, all foreign nationals require a valid visa to enter India, unless they hold an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. India offers both regular (sticker) visas and an e-Visa facility for eligible nationalities.
What is an e-Visa for India?
An e-Visa is an electronic travel authorization that allows eligible foreign nationals to apply for an Indian visa entirely online. Once approved, the e-Visa is sent to your email, and you print it to present at immigration upon arrival. It is valid for entry through designated airports and seaports.
How long does it take to get an Indian visa?
e-Visas are generally processed within 3-4 working days. Regular paper visas can take longer, typically 15 working days, but may extend up to several weeks depending on your nationality, visa type, and the processing embassy/consulate. It is recommended to apply well in advance of your travel date.
Can I extend my Indian visa while in India?
Most short-term tourist and e-Visas are non-extendable and non-convertible. Overstaying your visa is illegal and can lead to penalties or future entry bans. In genuine emergencies (e.g., medical hospitalization), extensions or conversions might be possible, but require official approval from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
